BIOGRAPHY
Marie Engle is an emerging young lyric mezzo-soprano based in New York City. Besides her work in opera, Marie is an active recitalist and chamber musician, performing works from Berlioz, to Berg, to improvised chamber programs. Marie has performed at the Theater an der Wien with soloists such as Plácido Domingo and Rosalind Plowright, and under the baton of conductors such as Bertrand de Billy, Marc Minkowski and René Jacobs. Marie participated in the 2016 season of the Franz Schubert Institute in Baden bei Wien, working with masters such as Elly Ameling, Helmut Deutsch, Wolfram Rieger and Roger Vignoles. She has been actively involved in recital work around the US, Canada and Austria, including her Pierrot Lunaire debut at Juilliard’s Chamberfest and recital tours of pieces like Jake Heggie’s The Deepest Desire and Schumann’s Frauenliebe und -leben. Marie made her debut with the Juilliard Opera singing Ramiro in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera, conducted by Joseph Colaneri and Un Pâtre in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortileges, conducted by Emmanuel Villaume. Marie studied at the Chautauqua Institution during the summers of 2018 and 2019, singing Mercédès in Bizet’s Carmen (2018) and Romeo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi (2019) and making her orchestral debut of Mahler’s “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen” from his Rückert Lieder with the Chautauqua Festival Symphony Orchestra. In 2018, Marie won awards from the Gerda Lissner and Grand Stage Song Competitions and premiered on WQXR’s Midday Masterpieces. In 2019, Marie joined Matthew Polenzani and Julius Drake in their Carnegie Hall recital performance of Janáček’s The Diary of One who Disappeared. Marie completed her B.M. at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music and her M.M. at the Juilliard School, where she studied with Marlena Malas. In her free time she loves to cook, go thrift-shopping and go for long runs.
